Kansas Department of Commerce logoThe Kansas Department of Commerce has awarded Salina Area Technical College a $210,000 grant to help with the start-up costs of the college’s planned Associate Degree in Nursing program.

The grant was through the Department’s Jobs and Innovative Industry Skills Training (JIIST) program.

The planned Associate Degree in Nursing program will be the second nursing program Salina Tech has started in recent years. The college’s first Practical Nursing class began in August of 2018. The Practical Nursing program can be completed in nine months, while the ADN program spans two years (not including prerequisite classes).

The Associate Degree in Nursing program was approved by the Kansas Board of Regents and the Kansas State Board of Nursing this past September, and is awaiting approval from the Chicago-based Higher Learning Commission.

The first ADN class is expected to start in August of 2019.

A Lennox engineer explains how the equipment worksLennox, a national provider of home heating and cooling systems, has donated a Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) unit to Salina Area Technical College.

The donation will allow students to learn about a state-of-the-art technology that is becoming increasingly common in the U.S. The equipment is worth about $20,000.

VRF systems were invented in the 1980s and are commonly used in Japanese office buildings, but they are still relatively new in the U.S. A single VRF unit can recover heat from a part of a building that is too hot and move it to an area that is too cool, allowing it to heat and cool different parts of the same building. The systems are more energy efficient than conventional HVAC systems.

Chrisxavier Cease, a junior at Abilene High School, gets hands-on experience using a welding simulator Wednesday at Great Plains Manufacturing’s inaugural Manufacturing Day. [ALLEIGH WEEMS / SALINA JOURNAL]

Ellsworth High School junior Ashley Woods has a history of working with machinery.

From growing up helping her father with the family ATV to taking small gas engine class at her high school, Woods said she is ready to pursue a career in the manufacturing industry.

“I really enjoy assembling parts and being hands on,” she said. “I also enjoy knowing about how to put things together and what makes them work.”

Woods was one of about 200 high school students representing 70 different school districts from across the state who on Wednesday attended Great Plains Manufacturing’s first ever Manufacturing Day.

The event was held in conjunction with National Manufacturing Day.

In addition to touring the Great Plains plant, the event gave students an opportunity to learn about what Great Plains offers, some of the tools and equipment used in the manufacturing industry and available resources to pursue a manufacturing career.
